A Hospitality Upgrade feature article

By Ahmad Ouri, SONIFI CEO

Guest technology doesn’t just have to be a cost line at your property.

Instead, it could be an extension of your revenue management strategy.

Here are some ways that reframing basic amenities like Wi-Fi and in-room TVs can boost both guest satisfaction and your bottom line.

Tune in to promoting your brand and revenue centers

With an average of 73% of guests turning on the TV in their room during a stay, you have incredible potential to reach a captive audience.

A good interactive TV system will transform what was once a passive entertainment endpoint into a powerful digital marketing tool. Extending your brand to the TV brings your unique draw into an engaged environment, on the largest screen in the room, with minimal distractions.

Customizable interactive features allow guests to use the TV to learn about on-site dining options, explore spa services, and take advantage of late checkout offers.

Curated content like property-branded videos, custom guest messages, and exclusive offers can deepen a guest’s emotional connection and loyalty to your brand.

And these aren’t just self-service conveniences for guests; every upsell and booking activated by the TV is a time-saver for your staff, as well as an immediate, trackable transaction for your property.

Additional promotions for on-property services or F&B specials can be automated to display based on inventory, demand, and time.

Integrations with PMS and CRM systems allow you to target promotions based on guest profiles, which increases personalization, conversion, and relevance.

When a relevant message is delivered to guests at the right time, it drives revenue for your hotel and value for your guests.

It’s also worth noting that when guests use in-room TVs to make decisions instead of calling the front desk, it alleviates workload for your staff and creates operational efficiencies—an especially important gain for properties navigating staffing constraints.

Welcome in partners and sponsors

Another revenue angle for the TV is advertising and sponsorships, with on-screen placements from local partners or premium service groups, as well as FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) channels in your programming lineup.

When integrated tastefully and targeted correctly, this becomes another monetizable touchpoint that enhances the guest journey.

These advertising opportunities are typically automated, requiring minimal effort for your staff, and include revenue sharing, ad income, or both for your property.

Pair this with revenue sharing from VOD purchases on your TV system, and you’ve got a reliable passive income stream that could offset your monthly service fees for in-room technology.

Cater to group experiences

For conference and group services, offering a custom TV package can be a high-impact, low-effort upsell opportunity.

It could include options like custom branding, messages, schedules, channel lineups, VOD listings, and on-prem (and on-theme) specials offered throughout the event, all automated to be promoted when event organizers know attendees will have downtime.

You can also extend the experience beyond guest rooms with custom Wi-Fi packages for groups and events.

Offering reliable private internet access is just the start. Add in customized splash pages, branding, SSIDs, bandwidths, and scheduling, and you’re standing out from the competition and booking more events at your property.

When you consistently deliver cohesive digital experiences that are personalized and catered to these specific audiences, you can drive long-term revenue through repeat business and industry referrals.

Focus on the guest, not the gadget

The best guest technology strategies don’t chase the latest buzzwords. They focus on frictionless experiences. That means selecting solutions that are intuitive for guests, easy for staff to manage, and flexible enough to scale as your property evolves.

It also means putting the guest at the center of every decision.

How can technology solve a problem, remove a hassle, create delight, or unlock value?

If the answer is clear, so is the business case.

And these examples aren’t theoretical. Many hotels are seeing concrete financial results when guest-facing technology is included in their business strategies, increasingly shaping how properties differentiate themselves, earn loyalty, and drive revenue.

Western Hotelier magazine reporter Robin Brunet talked to several communication technology leaders about how they’re providing high-tech solutions for budget-conscious hoteliers in Canada.

Article excerpts:

Roy Kosuge, chief operating officer at SONIFI, points out that his company is increasingly focused on helping hotels with limited budgets achieve the high quality of communications systems enjoyed by venues with deeper pockets.

He says, “Specifically, we use existing coaxial systems to operate products such as SORA, our next-generation interactive platform for hospitality.”

For over 40 years, SONIFI has been helping hoteliers improve guest satisfaction, simplify operations, and increase revenue with a variety of technologies and services.

SORA offers smart features and visually compelling interfaces to deliver personalized guest experiences; it’s designed as a visual complement to a guest’s overall stay and features a flexible platform that operates on and supports multiple in-room hardware options, including Google Chromecast, set-top-boxes, and smart TVs.

This innovation allows hoteliers to make the most of their existing technology investments.

Kosuge goes on to say that “on the Wi-Fi side, G.hn is an old-wired networking, but we’re currently leveraging it to deliver high-quality Wi-Fi over coaxial systems.”

At a time when costs are rising faster than revenue for many hospitality properties, it’s vital that any communications technology will ultimately improve staff efficiency and the guest experience.

Fortunately, whether the solution applies to front desk or in-room entertainment, delivering such solutions is precisely what the major tech companies are focused on.

LOS ANGELES (May 1, 2025) – The third annual TravelTech Breakthrough Awards program has named the Authentication and Management Platform (AMP) from global hospitality guest technology provider SONIFI as the 2025 “Guest Experience Solution of the Year.”

The prestigious awards program is conducted by TravelTech Breakthrough, a leading independent market intelligence organization that evaluates and recognizes standout travel technology companies, products and services around the world.

AMP is an enterprise-grade, self-service network management tool from SONIFI that simplifies how a hotel can configure, personalize and automate settings for the best connectivity throughout their property.

The Event Manager tool in AMP also lets hotels easily create private Wi-Fi networks with custom features that turn a typical amenity into bespoke experiences for conferences, weddings and events. Event Manager’s time-saving default presets and auto-configurations streamline how to create custom splash pages, branding, SSIDs, bandwidth settings, scheduling and much more for each event.

Advanced network, infrastructure and usage reporting in AMP gives users visibility into how a hotel’s network is being used so they can continually optimize their network and proactively maintain equipment. This also helps them make sure their Wi-Fi is ready to keep up with higher bandwidth demands, tighter security protocols, more connected guest devices and an increasing number of internet-dependent systems that are critical to a property’s operations like door locks, thermostats and POS stations.

“When hotels prioritize Wi-Fi—the amenity guests care about most—they show a true commitment to delivering an exceptional experience from check-in to checkout,” said SONIFI CEO Ahmad Ouri. “We’re honored to receive this TravelTech Breakthrough Award recognizing the impact of AMP in helping hoteliers enhance guest satisfaction, streamline operations and drive revenue through our advanced technologies and expert services.”

The mission of the annual TravelTech Breakthrough Awards program is to research and recognize the innovators who are transforming the travel technology landscape. The TravelTech Breakthrough Awards program aims to conduct the industry’s most comprehensive analysis of breakthrough technologies driving innovation and shaping the future of travel. This year’s program received received thousands of nominations from 14 countries, reflecting the global momentum and impact of travel technology advancements.

“SONIFI helps hotels meet their guests’ Wi-Fi demands while also using AMP to build a reputation of excellence. Wi-Fi has become the backbone of a great hotel experience. If a guest is frustrated by slow or spotty performance, it negatively affects their stay and reduces the likelihood of returning,” said Bryan Vaughn, Managing Director of TravelTech Breakthrough Awards. “From lobbies and guest rooms to the pool and on-site restaurant, guests expect seamless and reliable Wi-Fi. That’s why hotels across the country choose to power the best network experiences with AMP from SONIFI. Congratulations to SONIFI on winning the ‘Guest Experience Solution of the Year’ Award!”

Newly remodeled OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel features must-have guest technology and G.hn Wi-Fi from SONIFI https://www.sonifi.com/outrigger-waikiki-press-release/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 13:51:12 +0000 https://www.sonifi.com/?p=15625 The post Newly remodeled OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel features must-have guest technology and G.hn Wi-Fi from SONIFI appeared first on SONIFI.

LOS ANGELES (April 8, 2025) – Wanting travelers to have the best in-room amenities at the fully transformed OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel, the OUTRIGGER team turned to longtime technology partner SONIFI to provide the entertainment and connectivity their guests want and expect.

SONIFI technology is featured throughout the newly remodeled guest rooms at OUTRIGGER Waikiki Paradise Hotel

Located in the heart of Honolulu, Hawai‘i, OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel has been a familiar property with local residents for many years, formerly known as OHANA Waikīkī East by OUTRIGGER. With the full-property remodel OUTRIGGER led, they sought to completely reimagine the guest experience at the craft hotel, blending modern comforts with the cultural heritage of the island.

Along with a completely refreshed lobby, pool and fitness center, visitors are surrounded by artwork and murals by local artisans throughout the property, including the 443 newly renovated guest rooms and suites.

Each guest room is designed to be a sanctuary for travelers. Knowing how important staying connected is for their guests from all over the world, OUTRIGGER worked with SONIFI to upgrade its HSIA network using G.hn technology, which is capable of delivering Gigabit network speeds over a property’s existing coaxial cabling.

“OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel is a consistently high-occupancy property, typically with more than one guest per room, meaning there’s multiple connected devices at a time in every room. That requires a solid, reliable network across the property to support all the guest devices, in-room technology and hotel management systems,” said Paul Johnson, SONIFI’s General Manager of Internet Services. “Taking rooms out of service to run new cabling wasn’t feasible, so we worked closely with the property’s IT team to update their network with a G.hn solution.”

The new network delivers the stability and speed to meet guests’ Wi-Fi demands as well as the hotel’s back-of-house management needs. It also serves as the backbone to run other SONIFI technology installed in the rooms, including:

  • Interactive TVs with custom branding and features that drive revenue with promotions of the on-site amenities, other OUTRIGGER properties and third-party partners
  • Free-to-guest programming from DIRECTV, with custom lineups to include channels that cater to their international guests
  • Simple and secure streaming from thousands of apps with STAYCAST, where guests use their personal devices to cast content directly to the in-room TV

“Guests who are looking to unwind or rest for a bit in their room often turn to their favorite entertainment to relax,” Johnson said. “We looked at the property’s demographics and typical guest behavior to make sure they would have the comforts of home that they look for, while incorporating engaging and visually stunning opportunities on the interactive TV for OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel to promote how great their entire property is—leading to an increase in on-prem revenue for them.”

This upgrade wasn’t the first time the OUTRIGGER team has worked with SONIFI, and it won’t be the last.

“We partner with SONIFI for our property technology solutions because of the longstanding trust and reliability they’ve consistently demonstrated—both in the quality of their products and the expertise of their team,” said Henry Schwartz, Chief Information Officer at OUTRIGGER Hospitality Group. “They continue to deliver tailored, innovative solutions that align with the distinct needs of each of our properties and their guests. We’re especially pleased with their work at the newly reimagined OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration on future projects.”

“Guests, island locals, and the OUTRIGGER team all have high standards and expectations at OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel, just as they do for all OUTRIGGER properties,” Johnson added. “We’re honored to be trusted to deliver technology experiences designed to impress.”

The event space is a competitive business. And your interactive TVs and Wi-Fi services could help you stand out from the crowd—while boosting revenue for your property.

Here are some ways you can use your technology for unforgettable group services that will make you the go-to hotel for weddings, conferences, and events.

Create a special stay for the special day

Let’s say you’re working with a wedding planner to host a couple’s ceremony and reception in your event space, and have a large room block for their guests.

As part of your event offerings, you could promote an add-on custom TV package. With it, the TVs in their room block could power on to a menu in the wedding colors with a background image of the happy couple.

The interactive TV’s main menu then features a photo, favorite song, and video message from the couple thanking guests for traveling in—it makes a perfect backdrop for an influencer to post how excited she is to celebrate with her friends for the weekend.

The wedding planner tells you the couple and their friends are huge sports fans, so you adjust the channel lineup to put all the sports channels at the top of the guide. It’s another special touch to make their stay even better.

You also schedule a message to appear the morning after the wedding that congratulates the couple, and another that tells attendees where to go downstairs for the send-off brunch.

Bring the conference to every room

And what could this custom TV experience look like for a conference you’re hosting?

At turn-on, the TV features a personal greeting along with the conference’s logo and brand colors, making it a great way to welcome attendees in the rooms associated with the event.

Generate buzz and help everything feel connected by carrying that idea to a promotional video on the main menu that goes over the can’t-miss conference sessions and spotlights the event’s main sponsors.

In this case, not only can you charge additional for the custom TV package, conference organizers can also lobby for more sponsorship dollars given the added exposure.

You work with the event coordinator to complement the promo videos with personalized messages scheduled to automatically send throughout the conference.

Upon check-in, attendees get an invitation on the interactive TV to head to the lobby bar for the conference’s kick-off social hour.

Each morning, a simple message shares how attendees can find the schedule and locations of that day’s events, and a message each evening highlights a sponsor with a QR code to learn more about their services.

In the channel lineup, you designate a conference channel that livestreams the main stage sessions, so attendees who are under the weather or have to return to their room for a quick meeting won’t miss any of the action.

And when the event coordinator tells you a majority of the group speaks another language, you set the TV menus to display in their preferred language, and also add channels in that language to the lineup for the duration of the event.

On the last day of the conference, one last message lets attendees know where they can store their luggage until departure, and how to purchase a late checkout if needed.

Amp up event Wi-Fi experiences

When selling your group services, a stellar Wi-Fi package that includes a private network for the event elevates you above what your competitors can offer.

With the right internet partner, self-service tools allow you to easily set up event Wi-Fi that includes things like custom splash pages and branding, unique access codes and SSIDs, dedicated bandwidth, and 24/7 technical support.

Just like on the TV, you can include conference sponsors on the event’s splash screen, again increasing that exposure and revenue opportunity.

Implementing a conference services component to your network appeals to event planners and large groups—which increases your revenue potential and makes the event even more memorable for attendees.

Be sure to talk to your HSIA provider about it if you haven’t yet.

Partner up to level up your group services

To make things even easier for your staff, find a vendor who can provide both interactive TV and network solutions for your property.

Having just one place to ask questions and consult with on the best options simplifies the process for you both before implementation and after go-live.

It’s time to think about your TV and Wi-Fi as more than basic amenities. With a good technology partner, they can be just the thing to dazzle event organizers toward your property. And make you the venue that groups can’t miss and won’t forget.

What is G.hn? (And do I want it?) https://www.sonifi.com/what-is-ghn-wi-fi/ Fri, 08 Nov 2024 20:38:21 +0000 https://www.sonifi.com/?p=15265 The post What is G.hn? (And do I want it?) appeared first on SONIFI.

By Geri Sullivan, SONIFI Vice President of Key Accounts & Guest Internet Access Sales

Upgrading your network doesn’t have to mean a big overhaul at your property.

With G.hn having verified and sustained success in hospitality settings, it’s something you should know about if your hotel’s Wi-Fi needs some help.

Here are the most frequently asked questions we get about G.hn.

What is G.hn?

G.hn, which originated as Gigabit Home Networking, is a deployment option for Wi-Fi in your hotel that uses existing coaxial cables to give Ethernet-like performance in guest rooms.

For properties looking to upgrade their network, G.hn is an alternative to pulling new cables into rooms for Gigabit Wi-Fi speeds. It’s compatible with common coaxial distributions like home run, looped, and riser designs.

Is G.hn the same as DOCSIS?

No. While both G.hn and DOCSIS deliver high-speed internet using the same coax cabling as in-room TV services, G.hn is a faster and more stable solution.

G.hn is configured similarly to a standard Ethernet network, providing a simplified deployment without the hardware and licensing needs that come when tunneling is required (as DOCSIS does).

G.hn provides up to 1.7 Gbps bandwidth capacity for both download and upload traffic. This capacity is also sufficient to support distribution of linear television programming via IP, whereas DOCSIS can’t support IPTV.

Additionally, DOCSIS upstream channels are reliant on sub-band radio frequencies below 50 MHz, which may be used by other RF-based services and be more susceptible to noise interference. G.hn implementations typically use 60–200 MHz to avoid these challenges.

What kind of hotels use G.hn?

Properties that want to bring gigabit Wi-Fi speed into guest rooms—but want minimal disruption and a more cost-effective alternative to installing new cables—often choose G.hn for their network upgrade.

Ideal locations for G.hn include:

  • Independent & high-occupancy hotels where taking rooms out of service would greatly impact business
  • Resorts and campus-style properties where the scale of rewiring is cost-prohibitive
  • Branded hotels that have no renovations scheduled or budgeted but need to meet Wi-Fi brand standards (e.g., Marriott GPNS, Hyatt HSIA)
  • Legacy & historic hotels where there’s a no-cabling policy, or where construction would ruin aesthetics or disturb hazardous materials
  • Concrete buildings or sites with reinforced wall structure materials that make it difficult to bore or rewire

On the other hand, some small properties find that it’s more economical for them to run new CAT 6 cabling once infrastructure costs are factored in with technology costs.

New builds and hotels with closed renovations generally don’t choose G.hn as they have the conditions and scope to run fiber during construction, and don’t have to factor in taking rooms out of service.

Who can help me figure out if G.hn is right for my property?

A good Wi-Fi partner like SONIFI will do an on-site survey to determine if G.hn is a viable option for your infrastructure and goals.

They’ll also talk with you about both your short-term and long-term plans, and what additional factors should play into your decision.

Some questions they may cover include:

  • What do you want to accomplish with your network upgrade?
  • What’s your timeline and budget?
  • Are you planning a renovation of guest floors?
  • What’s brand-approved for your property?
  • Are you aiming to have an AP in every room?
  • What does your current coax distribution look like?
  • Have you factored in the cost of MATV remediation?
  • Is patch-and-repair work part of your scope and budget?

Based on your discussions, your Wi-Fi partner should give you options to choose from so you know you’re making a well-informed decision.

A good partner will be with you every step of the way, from initial planning to network design, to installation, to go-live, to ongoing support.

Your guests expect the best. And you deserve the best. So make sure you partner with the best.

Your guests expect the best.

Hotel Management feature article

By Paul Johnson, SONIFI General Manager of Internet Services

When it comes to internet, too many hotels have checked the box and moved on. From check-in to checkout and everything in between, many guest touchpoints rely on fast, secure Wi-Fi connectivity.

And it could be hurting your business and reputation if you’re not paying close enough attention to it.

Here are 5 signs your property’s internet is dragging you down instead of helping you stand out, and it’s time to switch providers.

A split image shows a woman in a hotel lobby logging onto the Wi-Fi network on her phone, and a man consulting his computer monitor to see Wi-Fi network statistics from SONIFI.

#1. Your online ratings and return customers are low.

Wi-Fi is such an integral part of people’s daily lives that if your network frustrates guests, it will affect their overall impression of your property.

If they can’t reliably stay connected throughout their stay or if they have a disappointing transaction or technology experience, they’ll let other people know about it—and they’ll look somewhere else next time they take a trip.

Your internet vendor should be constantly monitoring your network, have redundancy and failover plans in place, and proactively taking care of any issues so your guests stay connected and stay happy.

#2. Connecting to your network isn’t a great experience.

Is it clear to guests that they’re connecting to the right network?

Does your captive portal page look professional, reflecting the same branding, look, and feel as your website and interactive TV?

Is authentication simple, mobile-friendly, and fast?

Is it set up to ensure a secure, reliable connection for the duration of your guest’s stay?

If a guest waits longer than a few seconds to connect, is required to reauthenticate multiple times, or needs to call for help, your Wi-Fi is making a bad impression.

A good internet provider will make sure your setup is offering the best experience for you and your guests.

#3. You don’t know when or how your network’s being used.

It should be easy to see how much bandwidth your guests are using and when your network is being tapped the most. Having this information will help make sure your network is optimized and can handle the load it demands no matter when guests are connecting.

If you don’t know how your network is being used because of antiquated technology or visibility, you’re more prone to security risks and threats.

Tracking usage trends will also key you in to when it’s time to budget for equipment upgrades that will keep up with higher bandwidth demands, tighter security protocols, and more connected devices.

The best internet partner will provide a site survey and recommendations for both short-term and long-term solutions—including cabling, access points, wired ports, circuits, and other hardware and software—to keep everyone and everything connected at your property.

#4. Your Wi-Fi isn’t generating revenue for you.

Do you offer tiered bandwidth access?

Are you upselling conference network services?

Does your marketing team have access to email addresses for guests and visitors?

Your internet network has the potential to help you generate consistent revenue—while giving your guests as a seamless experience that’s better than your competitors.

Ask your vendor what options they have available to make internet revenue possible for your property.

#5. You think good enough is good enough.

Change is hard. But the cost of not changing can be worse. This is especially true in hospitality, where keeping up with guest expectations is paramount to staying ahead in the industry.

Prioritizing what matters most to your guests makes it clear you understand their needs and are here to make every aspect of their stay great. Your technology vendors should be doing the same—for both your guests and your staff.

They should be there for you from design to delivery, to ongoing monitoring and support. Everything should work right the first time, and every time. You should have peace of mind with the technology and the people behind it.

Because your guests expect the best, you should have SONIFI in your corner when it comes to all things Wi-Fi and network connectivity.

LOS ANGELES (June 6, 2024) – Leading hospitality technology provider SONIFI has created and released an advanced network management tool for hotels to enhance their conference service offerings with custom internet access for events.

The Event Manager feature is part of SONIFI’s authentication and management portal (AMP) for its HSIA customers. Through it, hotel and AV staff can easily configure custom networks for secure Wi-Fi access in specific spaces without interrupting the internet connectivity in guest rooms and public areas throughout the property.

The self-service portal allows staff to create custom access codes and captive portals, add messaging and branded elements, adjust bandwidth and authentication settings, set up terms of service and device whitelisting, and schedule the start and end times of the event’s internet network.

“SONIFI’s Event Manager gives greater control to properties of all chain scales—from full-service resorts to select-service business hotels—to enhance their conference and event coordination services,” said Paul Johnson, SONIFI’s General Manager of Internet Services. “They can tailor event attendees’ experiences, offering customizations and branding for a special touch, automations and scheduling for connectivity that’s simple and seamless, as well as access to SONIFI’s 24/7 support services to give contacts peace of mind that help is available if they ever need it.”

The Event Manager dashboards are designed to make network management as streamlined as possible for staff with event calendars, message boards, default presets and automated identification of Wi-Fi access points and wired internet ports.

Event reporting shows bandwidth use and device connections to help hotels refine their internet network and continue to monetize the services they can offer with their event spaces.

“Event Manager helps our customers appeal to groups looking for the best venue for their conference, meeting or wedding, knowing there will be a reliable private Wi-Fi network for their event,” Johnson said. “Hoteliers can use this as a differentiator to generate more revenue for their property and increase their guest satisfaction.”
